*Renaming of the Skibneski Nature Slide competition to Tops in NJ for Nature

Federation is announcing that the Skibneski contest will now also be renamed starting with the 2003-04 season, as a "TOPS" for Nature Slides contest.  The Federation expresses its appreciation for these individuals for starting and funding these particular contests.  They literally made a contribution and a challenge of its member clubs for competitive success and achievement within the Federation.

*A Brief Skibneski & Mallas Trophy History

.....From a correspondence with William D. Griffin, FPSA, NJFC on May
23, 2003...

I met Clem Skibneski sometime around 1970.  He was then a member of Vailsburg CC.  At the time I was teaching several adult school photography classes, and giving slide shows to the various clubs.  Clem phoned to ask if I would tutor him individually in Nature photography, which I agreed to.  That winter/spring around 1970, he and his wife came to my home three or four Sundays to learn how to take photos of birds at a window feeder.  Again several times the following summer he came to photograph butterflies and other insects in my garden.  When Clem died (about 1979 or 80), his wife created a memorial to him by funding the Skibneski Trophy with the Federation.  The first Skibneski contest was in May of 1980 and it's been held ever since.

The Vailsburg CC still has a Skibneski Award for the "Best Story Telling Nature Slide" (info supplied by Vailsburg CC).

Somewhere in the mid-1960's an annual contest for the Top color slide was started as the Mallas Trophy.  This trophy was funded ,for many years, by Dr. William Mallas and his wife Mary.  Both were highly successful members of Vailsburg CC.  They lived on the hilltop over-looking West Orange.  He was a dentist with an office at the corner of Broad & Market Streets in Newark.  Sometime in the 1970's they moved to Florida.  Sometime in the 1980's, the name of the Annual Pictorial Slide (Mallas) contest was changed to "TOPS".

Please send entries to the appropriate competition chairperson by the listed deadline.
